It Is Important to Get Backlinks

I have always suspected that it is important to get backlinks, but I suspect that I really didn't fully comprehend their true power. The second part of the 60 Day HubPages Challenge is to promote the articles that were written during the first part.

Content may be king, but backlinks and promotion will determine the size of your kingdom. That concept really hit home while brousing the HubPages forums last night. One of the Hubbers posted a thread stating that he was on track to make $100 in AdSense that day. $100 in a day! The key thing was that he has only written 19 Hubs.

Someone asked how this was possible with only 19 Hubs. He stressed that it took good keyword research and lots and lots of backlinks. I think that I have done a decent job with the keyword research, but a terrible job with the backlinks.

I think that is why I am excited to participate in the 60 Day Challenge as I will be forcing myself to focus on obtaining links to my articles. Then I will be able to assess the true impact on the traffic that is generated. I did spend time doing some keyword research and trying to pick decent topics based upon the results of the research and my spheres of interest and experience.

I think the overall success of my writing is going to depend upon my ability to generate traffic through the use of good promotion techniques. I have never been a salesman and have a difficult time with self promotion so it will take quite a bit of effort.

My plan is to start today taking those articles that I have written for the challenge and start with Xomba. Then I will move to Redgage and SheToldMe. I will also search to see if there are any other good social bookmarking sites that offer revenue share. I might as well see if I can earn additional money while trying to get traffic. Then I will move on to other sites. I do have a Snipsly account also that offers revenue share.

Just working with these four sites will likely take me the better part of the rest of May, but it will be interesting to see the results. Of course, I will be sure to let you know what happens. I am encouraged that my traffic had been slowly rising without my doing much during the past few months. Maybe expending some effort will be fruitful. I did notice that I would get much more traffic to this blog when posting a few links here and there, so maybe the impact will be positive.

  1. Hi Kidgas,
Don't forget to use StumbleUpon too. You don't earn money from the link but I generally get hundreds of hits from those links. Good luck.

  2. Oh, I won't forget to use StumbleUpon as well. I have an account but haven't noticed a ton of traffic from that source. Maybe if I use it more consistently, my results would be better. That is what I will be trying.

  3. Hi Kidgas. I agree with Deanna - traffic sources like Stumbleupon, Digg can be a useful source of traffic. However I don't think the backlinks are do follow (so it is arguable whether they help your search engine rankings at all), traffic from such sources is nororiously unlikely to click on ad etc (certainly not as much as search engine traffic) and many sites have either blocked Hubpages.com submissions or are on the look-out for such submissions as they all discourage self submission/spamming.

As such I would recommend backlinking using SheToldMe and Redgage first since you can earn from links and they are do-follow and they seem to rank highly in search engines (for one particular keyword my hub is at place number 1, SheToldMe is at 3, Redgage at 4 and Xomba at 8). Only slight problem with Xomba is I don't think the links are do-follow.

Aside from this you could use a Blogger/Wordpress blog or other revenue sharing sites such as Infobarrel if you are williing to create longer posts to provide backlinks.

  4. Wow, Kidgas, this is extremely helpful. I haven't built backlinks to the few hubs that I have which could responsible for the lack of revenue as well. Will probably take on the 60 day Hub Challenge next month and see how it goes with KW research, backlinks and all the jazz:-)
Look forward to hearing your results!

  5. Thanks for your comment on my blog. Do you know that you can vote your own scoop on shetoldme.. and you just need another member to vote your scoop to get it promoted to front page. Buzz me, I can vote for you. Cheers.

  6. BristolBoy,
Congrats on the Google results. I will try to focus on those sites which bring links as well as revenue.

    prerna,
It will only be helpful if I can generate additional traffic and revenue. It will take about a month for me to get it done and some time after that before I know the full impact.

    Jason,
You are welcome. I discovered that the other day and was surprised that it was that easy to make the front page.

  7. Sounds like you have a good plan! I've found that I get the most "link-juice" from using high PR sites like EzineArticles.com and blog comments. Often you need to choose between building back links with the purpose of ranking higher in the SERPs and those you are building to generate instant traffic. For example, many social bookmarking sites links are no-follow, so they won't help your SERPs much. I hope you start seeing some good results soon!

  8. Michelle,
I hope it is a good plan. I am starting to figure out that many of the social bookmarking sites are no-follow so I may not want to waste much time with that. I will just have to see what happens. I just plan to keep plugging away.

  9. I just posted a few links on Xomba for the first time in over a month. It appears that no one clicks on links that are more than a month old. I'll put up more little by little through June and see what happens. I'm more up to date on RedGage. I get views there, but the last I checked, I haven't gotten much traffic from there to my blogs or HubPages. My most recent discovery is TwAitter, where I can set up recurring automatic tweets. The traffic I get from Twitter isn't really impressive, but it's certainly better than Xomba or RedGage. I haven't looked into SheToldMe.

  10. David,
I hadn't noticed that no one clicks links over a month old. Interesting information for sure. I just started with RedGage and am getting a few views and pennies there.

I will have to check out TwAitter since that sounds interesting for sure. I am getting most of my traffic from Google which is nice. I am hoping links will improve rankings and traffic.

  13. Hey Kidgas, just started following this blog through RSS. I already make a decent income online and I follow all the big internet marketers, but I also like to follow the hungry little guys.

Do you have a link to the forum where the guy was making $100 with only 19 hubs, I would like to see how he is building backlinks! (I will share what I find with you :D)

  14. Jeremy,
Thanks for following. I am honored and a hungry little guy as you say.

The Hubber's name is Misha. Here is a post but not the one that I was referencing. Maybe you can derive some info from cruising the forums. I will look some more.
