My Computer is Dead!

Ouch! I can't believe it. My laptop died so I am having to use the kid's computer to write this. I don't know exactly what is wrong, but it just won't finish booting up. On Saturday, I unhooked my iTouch iPod from charging, saw some strange blue screen that said something was wrong.

Well, I didn't think anything off it and shut off the computer with the intention of re-booting. But, it just simply won't come on. It seems to get stuck during the boot up process. It seems to me like it is a software issue, something with Microsoft's Windows. But I don't know enough to figure it out.

Saved All My Files

At least I was able to get it to come on in "safe mode" and move all my important files onto a flash drive. Thank God for small miracles. I will probably have to wait until next week to get it to a professional to check out since I don't have a lot of time this week.

At least I know that I have all of the pictures, spreadsheets, and articles that represent lots of work over the years. I am sure that some of it will have to be sorted through and cleaned out but at least I have the important things also.

I know that this doesn't have much to do with online income, but really it does. One of my biggest concerns has been losing a lot of articles and work because a website goes out of business or changes ownership. But I have never had a computer go bad and not be able to get to my own data. That wasn't true this time, either but was very close. Too close for comfort!

I even read Ruth's post about backing up your work. But I didn't do anything about it. Well, from now on, I will be keeping a disc somewhere with the majority of my files on it and update once per quarter or so.

Now, what do you do to back up your work? Ever have a computer die on you? Tell me your horror stories or how lucky you were.

  1. Oh man, Kidgas, I feel your pain.

    I learned early on to backup my work often, especially if you’re using a Microsoft operating system. Using Windows has taught me how to use a filing system that makes system backups very easy. All of my work is saved under one main folder with various sub directories. When its time for me to backup my work, I really only have to copy one folder to a flash drive.

    The lovely blue screen of death was becoming a daily occurrence until I recently upgraded to Windows 7. I hope you’re able to figure out the problem. If you have the time and inclination, you might want to do a reformat and reinstall of the operating system (just make sure you have the installation discs for all of your software programs).

    Because I reformat and reinstall so often, I have copied all of my program installation discs onto one flash drive. That way when it comes to reinstalling all of my programs and drivers, I don’t have to search for the discs. Just plug in the flash drive and move from folder to folder installing all of the programs.

    Thank God your kids have computers to help you out in a pinch. I remember back in the stone age when computers were so expensive, there was only one in the house. Now, if one goes down, you can use your kid’s computer. All you really need is a pair of sunglasses to shield your eyes against the bright and wild colors kids love to use on their desktops.

  2. Sorry your laptop conked out on you. Good thing you were able to salvage your files via safe mode. I need to go do the same thing pronto. I haven't backed up my files in a while.

  3. @ebele,
    Thanks much for your concern. Yes, it was good that I was able to save everything. I am still using the kids' computer. Maybe next week I can get mine looked at.

    @Felicia,
    It is my first encounter with the blue screen of death. I have had decent success with computers and this was only my 2nd laptop in about nine years. It does seem that it is a software problem and that reloading Windows may do the trick. Unfortunately, I will have to take it to someone to help with that technical aspect.

    I am trying to ignore the large turtle wallpaper on the kids' computer but it does hurt the eyes :)
